Psychopathology, Parent-Adolescent Communication, Familial Conflict in the Adolescent Offspring of Alcoholic Parents

Abstract
Objectives£ºb The objective of this study is to examine psychopathology, parent-adolescent communication, parental conflict according to parental drinking problem.

Methods£º Subjects were middle and high school students in Gang-seo gu, Seoul city(N=2341). Self-rating questionnaire included demographic data, K-YSR parent-adolescent communication inventory, conflict tactics scales 2 and children of alcoholics screening test.

Results£º Adolescents of parents with drinking problems had significant higher score indicating the internalizing problem, externalizing problem, depression, problematic communication, family conflict. The K-YSR scores for sons of alcoholics were significantly higher for social withdrawn, attention problem, delinquency, aggressive behavior and so on. For daughters of alcoholics, also significant difference were found for all psychopathology.

Conclusion£º we found that adolescents in alcoholic have a risk of displaying various psychopathology, depressive symptom. Adolescents in alcoholic households are more likely to have problematic parent-adolescent communication, familial conflict.
